Speaker 1.01 is a small application for use with Apple's Speech
Manager.  It provides simple text editting abilities, and various
speech abilities (by line, by file, by return key).  Also provides a
menu of voices and allows you to change the pitch and rate.

The attached BinHex file contains a StuffIt Deluxe 3.0 archive of BBEdit
Lite 2.3.1. This is the latest maintainence release, which fixes some
minor bugs and adds some minor performance improvements.

This version supersedes all previously uploaded versions of BBEdit 2.1.x,
2.2.x, and 2.3. It does -not- replace the BBEdit 2.5 demo.

BBEdit Lite 2.3.1 is available immediately for anonymous ftp from

For those not familiar with it: BBEdit Lite is a plain-text editor with
powerful and flexible multi-file search capabilities. BBEdit Lite 2.3

programmers, on-line service users, and other Mac users who need a

Fetch is a MacTCP-based FTP client for the Mac developed
by Dartmouth College.  It is freely available for educational and
non-profit use, and users in government and for-profit settings
can license a copy for $25 (see the About box for details).

Fetch was designed to make accessing Internet file servers as
simple as possible.  The interface is modeled after the standard
"get file" dialog box, complete with icons for files and folders.
Fetch supports all the common file formats (BinHex, multi-part
BinHex, MacBinary, AppleSingle, StuffIt!) and can recognize
these formats automatically.  Other features include:

* A customizable "suffix mapping" feature that associates file
name suffixes with file formats or types.

* Transfering of multiple files and/or directory trees with one
command.

* A customizable pop-up menu for frequently accessed servers.

* Background operation for all commands.

Version 2.1.1 includes the following changes:

* The connect dialog is now modeless and moveable, so you can
switch applications without dismissing it.
* AppleSingle version 2 is now supported.
* File lists can contain up to 32,000 names (rather than 1,000).
* Fetch no longer writes to nil (so it is compatible with
EvenBetterBusError).
* A problem with Cancel taking 2 minutes has been corrected.
* A problem with Close Connection... hanging (when using ARA or

What Is This Thing?

File Dropper is a THINK C 6.0 library that implements an application that y=
ou
can drop files or folders onto to do batch operations on.  It handles the
getting of the AppleEvents if running under System 7, the main event loop, =
and
the menus.  You need only write the code that acts on the individual files.

o  Fixed a bug so that when you drop a folder onto your File Dropper
   application, all the files inside are processed in stead of just the
   first one.

o  Built "File Dropper =B9" in THINK C 6.0
o  The cursor is NOT reset to an arrow after each call to SetStatusPercenta=
ge.
o  If you return FALSE from the eStartup, eSFInitialize, or eAEInitialize
   messages, File Dropper  will send you an eQuitting message and quit the
   application.
o  If you return FALSE from the eValidate message, File Dropper will skip a=
ny
   remaining files in the current batch.

This is a resubmission of the game Gamma Zee. The original was stored in a
newer version of Bin-Hex and of Stuffit than it should have been. This one
is compact-proed.

    Gamma Zee is a ShareWare game, in which you run around a maze to get
    to
the exit. Of course the maze has lots of obstacles and challenges making
the game fun and exciting. With a powerful editor, the game can be fun for
months. It also has sounds, music and 8-bit color graphics. The online help
system plus quick-editor-reference sheet make the game fun and easy to use.

This Compactor Pro archive contains GL Viewer 1.1, a THINK C port of
glib (from the xgrasp 1.7 distribution), THINK C sources, GL
documentation, and a sample GL library.  Please note that it was built
presupposing a 68020, a 68881, and 32-bit QuickDraw, and that it works
best with an 8-bit color monitor.

Most of this work is derived from software copyright (c) 1991 by
Patrick J.  Naughton.

Although I have only added -- and not removed -- functionality to
these programs, because GL Viewer can still crash your system (-- and
I am interested in obtaining files that cause this), *caveat emptor!*

I've read a bit of whining on the net about AppleScript and the Finder's
inability to rename and delete files, so I thought I would do something
about that.  Here are three new commands for AppleScript; deleteFile,
moveFile and renameFile.  This is version 1.0a6 of Jon's Commands.  More
commands will be added later as time permits and we'll climb up the curve
towards beta as features are added.

These commands are free for noncommercial use.  Contact me for a cheap
commercial licence.  Also, contact me if you have bugs to report or
suggestions for features.  My plans include conversions of a large number
of my XCMDs. Watch for updates.

1. WHAT IT IS: ARTAbrot is yet another Mandelbrot program with the big
difference being that it uses the AT&T DSP3210 in ARTA to perform the
intensive Mandelbrot calculations.

2.  SOURCE CODE TOO!  Complete source code is provided.  For those who
would like some sample ARTA source code (which is scarce at the time of
this release).  The DSP3210 source code is in file mbrot.s.  All of the host
DSP function calls are in brotcode.c.  For those of you considering DSP
programming, take a look at the mbrot.s DSP source code.  This is DSP3210
assembly code, but it is very much like C code -- one of the very nice
features of the DSP3210.

Network Othello 1.1b2

   This is the second version of Net Othello, which allows several
users to play othello over an AppleTalk network. It allows users to
play several games against different opponents simultaneously and is
fully MultiFinder compatible.  It can run on system 6, or system 7.

Improvements over first version:

  Net Othello now works across AppleTalk zones.  There are also some
internal changes which make it communicate more reliably over the
network.

  There is also a known bug: If you try and register yourself with a
name that someone else is using, you get a dialog prompting you to
enter a new one. After doing this, it bombs :(

  I will work on fixing this one.  Please let me know of other bugs
you find, or suggestions you have.

     In a typical computer lab, computers have numerous users during the
day.  Often, these users will shut down the computer when they are
finished using them.  Studies show that there is less strain on a
computer's components when power is continually left on, than when the
power to the computer is repeatedly switched on and off.
     NiceStopShutDown will restart the computer when 'Shutdown' is
chosen from the 'Special' menu.  HOWEVER, if the option key is down, the
computer will shut down gracefully (and the hard disk's head will be
parked--this is important).
     There are other similar extensions, but they require that you turn
the power to the computer off while the Mac is in the proccess of
rebooting, which can be dangerous to components such as hard disks.

NiceStopShutDown has been tested on the following machines running
System 7:  Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic II, IIci, LC 520, Duo 210, and
Quadra 700.

conditions specified.
This is a demo version limited to 6 nodes only. The original version is

by memory since
more nodes increase the memory requirements substantially.
Linear problems can also be solved more easily since the solution converges
after only 2 or 3
iterations, but it is not useful since the usage of this application
concentrates on deflections of
soft material (large deflection problems).

This program can be included on the CD-ROM.

can also stretch these dialogs vertically, so you can see more file names.

    This text file is a small "tutorial" of sorts describing how to
use a hex editor to edit your characters in the new, and fantastic,
PathWays Into Darkness. It is a "how to" edit in items, health, position
in dungeon, proficiency and all. It is a must have if you are stuck in the
game (or out of ammo!) and need a little boost. It is also a large
spoiler (it does not include any spoilers on any of the puzzles or
what to do in the game) if you use it the wrong way... Some people tend
tothink that using it in the wrong way is actually the right way and adds
to the game... :) You deside, fun discretion is advised.

PolyMine is a game with special grid and mines. The objective is find all the

It simulates gravity using a smily face. You can change the face, of
course. The gravity and elasticity of everything is totally controllable,
and you can pick the face up and place it anywhere, and set it's motion
vector.
I just wrote a new version (0.2) that's a lot better, though, so I would
like it better if you included that instead. Here it is:
This is a really awesome Gravity Simulator for the Mac.

Is there any extension/cp/utility or other such beast that will let one mount
DART disk images on the desktop, ala MountImage for DiskCopy images?

DiskCopy runs kind of buggy on my Q700, it keeps asking for the same disk
again
and again... I like the interface of DART better, and it compresses the
images,
and you get a great set of steak knives!  8-)

Any ideas/comments/suggestions/nudges in the proper direction would be greatly
appreciated...

1) Has anyone had any experience with the HP Deskwriter 500C? Is it

2) My StartUpScreen (IIsi, 256colors) always appears in B/W on startup,
   while on other IIsi's it does not. Any StartUpScreen has this problem.

Subject: 800 Upgrade Troubles

Considering the situation, I decided that I should make use of my last
purchase opportunity from Apple and trade in my 900 for an 800.  According
to the stats, the 900 is 10 times the speed of a Classic while the 800 is
15 times as fast.  That's half again as fast.  In addition, I'm using an
800 at work (yeah, I only managed to get 6 days off - bummer) and I like
the speed.  So I go for it.

I got the 8/500 configuration, so I ordered 3 Four Meg SIMMs from the Chip
Merchant on COD overnight for $160 a piece.  I would have got an 8 and a 4,
but the 8s weren't in stock.  Still, this leaves me with an empty SIMM slot
for future upgrades.  In case you didn't figure it out by now, the 800 uses
the new 72 pin SIMMs which can be installed one at a time.

I also installed my boards.  I have an extra video board, a modem board and
a VideoSpigot, so that filled up the slots available.

The memory and boards aren't my problem though.  The mouse is.  Despite my
best efforts, it inexplicably freezes up at boot sometimes.  It never
happens if I shift-boot without extensions, but it can happen with a
completely stock system, in addition to some indeterminate set of
extensions in my custom system.  I am running my custom system right now
and it works, but it's flakey.  If I put the new Sound Manager in, the
mouse will freeze, but if I take it out, the mouse will still freeze, so
it's not the extension that's causing it and removing it doesn't always
help.

I've removed the boards. I've removed the SCSI devices.  I've reinstalled a
completely clean system.  It bites.  I don't what else to try.

Any clues, tips or suggestions would be appreciated.  Have any other 800
owners had this trouble or has it gone more smoothly.  My work machine is
relatively clean, so I don't see this there.  I am more interested in some
of you INIT-laden folks running skanky systems like mine.

       Was looking for an EtherNet card for the LCIII (Info-Mac 11-166).
       Boy do we have cards out 'dere, ya hey.

Here's the summary (I haven't checked this with any of the vendors):

[1]     Maybe Apple's Ethernet card for the LC?
[2]     We have Farallon cards working in our LCIIIs, with no problems.
[3]     Asante, sells an Ethernet card for the LC III.
    Part # 99-00089-01, retail $269, educational discount to $146.
    Fits thinnet and 10Base-T and has FPU socket (chip is extra).

    Phone is 408/435-8388.
[4]     Someone has an LC III with an Apple Ethernet LC card ($157) in

    it and an Asante Ethernet AUI (thicknet) adapter/cable ($65)

    hanging off of the card. Been using this setup with Mac X for

    about 4 months with no problems.
[5]     FOCUS Enhancements, 800-538-8865 has them. They cost about $180.
    [Could be less if my catalog is current --Pete]
[6]     Cabletron's cards (?called LC-II cards?) fit in the LCIII.
    No problems with the software [for this reply].  The cards have
    10-Base-T, which means they have an AUI connector and an RJ-45.

[7]     Try Asante. They are advertising one.
[8]     We've been using (an Asante card) for a few months now;
    no reported problems.  MCLC TNIII (thin) $135 (educational price)

My SE/30 screen has the DTs.  I posted about two weeks ago (11-166?) and
got one reply.  Thought the network should know (inquiring minds).

In summary, he writes:
The problems with your SE/30 are associated with the scan
circuit, either the flyback transformer, or the flyback
transistor, or a coupling capacitor whose number I've
forgotten, or could be all three!! I don't think I've ever
tracked this one down exactly - when my SE did it I waited
until the thing really stopped working totally and then
changed the three bits I noted above. I've done one or two
for NEMUG members, but I usually do a full analogue board
upgrade at the same time.

My SE (uses the same analogue board as the SE/30) worked for
about 18 months with the jitters, before it really died.

Flyback transformers are about US$60, transistors about
$9.50, capacitors about $1.50, labour about $30. Costs
shouldn't vary too much.
[Plus the usual admonition about dealer prices probably higher.]

According to LaCie, the VERY MOST ABSOLUTE LATEST version of
Silverlining is 5.5 -  not even released on disk yet - it's so
COMPLETELY NEW that they've just started giving out DISKCOPY images of
the non-released DISKS!

Wanted:  a copy of the original 1984-vintage 128K-Mac System 1.0, with
Finder and preferably with original desk accessories and fonts and
whatever else was in the System Folder of that time.

If you know someone who is still contentedly typing away on original
MacWrite while using his/her unimproved Mac 128K, this person might be
more likely to have such primordial software than the average reader of
this list.  Be willing to ask around?

OK, you're probably wondering why?  Collector's weirdness; I have the
Systems 2.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 6.0x (a few gaps), 7.01, and furthermore
I can RUN them all on my SE, so it's a good place for an historical
archive.  I've been told I can run 1.0 also, although not the even
earlier 0.1 rush-to-market release.

(One forgets over the years how much of a sludgy memory-hog even
System 6 is until loading earlier Systems.  An SE could really FLY
with the operating system software that was current when it was a new
machine!  Remember using "Switcher" before the MultiFinder came out?
And how disappointing the MultiFinder was in comparison?  Etc...)

Hi, I recently bought a Powerbook 160, and want to ba
able to use some of the software from the sumex-aim
archive, and am having trouble getting the code into
the mac.  I can ftp .hqx files to my workstation, and
then use mcvert to convert them to MacBinary.  From there
I'm stumped.  I can put the binary files onto a disk, which
the PB Superdrive can read, but when I transfer the binary
file to the mac using Apple File Exchange, under the default
translator, it winds up on the mac as a text file, and when
I click on it, I get the message that the application that
created the file could not be found.  Am I missing some piece
of translating software?

Hello,

Has anybody been successful in using the copydoubler-II-demo at sumex?
I have d/l'd it twice now, and put it in the control panel folder.  But when
I restart the machine, it immediatly claims that the demo has expired and that
I have used it already for 3 weeks.  But heck no, I haven't used it for a
minute.  I haven't fiddled around with the system clock either, nor have I
changed my system in anyway.  All I did was d/l it and put it in the system
folder and restart.  Any ideas?

NCA Peripherals here in Sillycon Valley sells those 4 models for practically
the same price, around $1200.

Well, I can't offer any advice, but I have noticed that Microsoft isn't the
only culprit. MacWrite Pro is disgustingly slow. I got a free upgrade,
even, but finally just gave up and returned to MacWrite II. MacWrite Pro
is so slow that when it's loading into RAM it has to display little
messages like "loading XTND module" (or something) just to let you
know your system hasn't bombed.

I realize that it's a crime against nature to only have an LC when I
should really upgrade to a Quadra, but I'd really be grateful if software
publishers tried just a little harder to keep their programs from
becoming fat and slow.

With save dialogs you will find those "edit windows" where you enter the
name of the (new) file.  (What is the PC term for "edit wondows"?)
Editing could be a lot easier if there were some simple commands available,
such as "jump to beginning of next/previous word".

Is there an init/patch that enables me to use such commands?
Why is this not a standard?

Is there an easy way to patch the finder to add keyboard shortcuts

I still can't believe that Apple needs such programs as QuickKeys.
If they don't want it to be in the system then why don't they put
QuickKeys onto the "Tidbits" disk?

Is there a conversion utility to preserve the national accentuated characters
while FTPing from a Vax to a PC or a Mac.

Context: Swiss national keyboard can generate the specific characters of our
three first national languages (German, French, Italian). People wish to
transfert texts with national characters through FTP.

On the Vax the character set is ECM-94.
DOS : PC-8.
Windows : standard windows character set.
Mac : standard Mac character set.

Of course a specific programme may be written, but does a general utility
exist?

way it was possible with BITNET (which was also mail only before my old
school got regular INTERNET access). An aol mail message can't be sen't
without a subject, and my attempts to subscribe with a "path
[e-mail]" or "reply [e-mail]" were fruitless. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Now that aol splits up files there should be no sweat
with us subscribing and I know many people here are interested.

I recently bought an HP 550C. I use it with a Classic that I use primarily
for e-mail and word processing. The printing can be very slow. Would the
addition of an accelerator make a difference? If so, can anyone suggest
an accelerator?

Also, over the weekend my Mac crashed while trying to print. The System
and Word (what I was using at the time) both kicked the bucket. I found
all sorts of directory problems with MacTools. Does anyone have any
information and first-hand experience to indicate that this was related

I need some clues to a problem running HyperCard from an AppleShare
fileserver. First user access is okay, subsequent get an "application
missing/busy alert." HyperCard, the home stack, other stacks, and
folder containing all are locked on the server. The server is a
Classic II running AppleShare 2.0.1- workstations are Mac Plus
or Mac SE running system 6.0.5 from floppy start-ups. I have another
site with same server but users running System 7.0.1, and no problems-
Can it be the first site has an outed version of AppleShare?

Subject: ImageWriter II fonts

Actually, the IMII has three built-in fonts (well, two distinct faces, to
be precise).  They are the draft mode fonts, and can be selected by the
button next to the power switch on the printer.  You pick draft in the
printer dialog box, and then choose which of the three draft fonts you want
on the front of the printer (it's that green light that lights up as left
half, right half, both halves).  Due to the painstakingly slow printing of
TrueType under System 7 on the 68000 machines, it is very useful to print
in draft mode.

The lowest quality draft font is kind of ugly, but very fast.  The middle
and high (same face, but high is double strike) look pretty good and print
a little slower.  One caveat -- you have to remember to write your text in
a monospaced font like Courier if you want the screen to correspond to the
printout.  Obviously, you can't print any graphics in this mode, but if
you're just doing text, I think the high quality draft mode is as good as
any dot matrix printer.

Of course, all of this is loud; it's an impact printer.  If the question
arose regarding fonts because someone wants to buy an IMII, I'd vote
against it.  The StyleWriter is much better, faster, quieter, has a sheet
feed, and is MUCH lighter to lug around.

Like "Phillip Broussard" <[e-mail], we too have a Mac IIfx
with an internal (HP) 330 MB hard disk (properly terminated) and 2 external (
Fujitsu), properly (black) terminated drives: 1.0 GB and 2.0 GB (for a total
of 3.0 GB external).

No matter what I did (change SCSI ID numbers, cable arrangement, no INITs,
etc)
, if BOTH drives were connected the mac would bounce between the two external
drives looking for a complete system folder (which I had carefully insured did
NOT exist) while completely ignoring the internal drive.  Note that BOTH SCSI
Probe AND Snooper said that there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with the SCSI
chain (once I had booted from the internal drive and mounted the 2 external
drives).

Note also that if either ONE of the external drives was connected the mac
booted perfectly.  The minute both were connected- no boot.

And then I thought of something completely evil: Since the mac searches the
SCSI chain from ID 7 to 0, I thought "Why not make the internal drive have ID
=
 6?"  Don't ask me why, but this (sort of) worked.  The mac now tries to boot
>From the 2 external drives once and then boots from the internal drive
correctly.  Strange, no?

My only other comment would be that perhaps this is somehow related to the way
the disks were formatted (but then why would everything work just fine if only
one of either of the external drives is connected?).  Or perhaps it has to do
with the fact that the 2 external drives are configured to use SCSI-2 and the
internal uses SCSI-1?  Or perhaps there IS something mystical about having 3
GB external?  In any case, I'm still pretty confused but at least now the
*@$!#
 thing boots...

Any comments or further enlightenments are more than welcome...

A friend of mine can obtain an old Summagraphics '961' tablet really cheap.
Unfortunately it's from a dump, so it comes without guarantees and/or docs.
He asked me whether it might work on a Mac. I said I wasn't sure, so I ask
you the following:

 - does anybody have such a tablet connected to his Mac? I've seen the thing
   and it has something which looks like a PC-style serial port to me (at
   least
   it's a 25-pin connector with way too many teeth missing to be a parallel
   one)
   I know there is/was a cdev for the Mac to connect a PC serial mouse to a
   Mac,
so some connection must be possible. Whether this tablet sends something which
   is understandable to the Mac is, of course, a different matter. I guess
   some
   hacking may bring the thing in working order. My friend would already be
   glad
   if it could be used to produce (using a program 'to be written' a TEXT file
   with coordinates traced.

 - Does anybody know any specifics of such a tablet regarding resolution and
   strength (i.e. is it possible to wear such a thing out easily?)

Our campus CD-ROM server (PC based) has been outfitted with a klunky Mac
interface called OnLAN/Mac.  This allows us to access Medline on CD-Rom,
but unfortunately getting the information back to my Mac is a problem.  Our
administrator tells me there is no fix.

Messing around with it, I tried the "print" command, and sort of figured it
would print to some anonymous PC printer somewhere, but actually, it
printed to my own laserwriter.

OK.  This thing would work *if* I had a chooser level device that sent the
information to my disk rather than to the laser writer.  I sort of recall
in the old days there being "print to disk" utilities that did this sort of
thing.  Is there a Mac utility that might work here??

BTW, only ASCII info is needed.

Subject: Quantum Pro40S drive troubles

I have a Quantuam Pro40S drive (40Meg SCSI) in a Mirror Technologies
case.  The external drive worked dandy for months until one day, I
decided that I didn't realy need the external drive on (since the case
fan makes quite a ruckus).

I turned off the drive (case power switch) and used the Mac (Classic II)
and everything was fine.  The next day, I turned on the external drive
(again, case power switch) and then the power bar for the whole computer
system.  The mac came online nicely, but the quantum drive didn't make
a sound (except for the mirror cooling fan).

I have since checked the case & ps and they are fine.  Ground is okay,
and the power connecter is delivering +5 and +12V to the right places.

Is there a "simple" reason why this drive no longer spins up?
Is there a simple fix?
Is there any hope?  (I kept my current source code on that drive...)

Not long ago, I posted a request for information re the existence
of a SoftPC demo, because I had downloaded one from one of the
ftp sites, but had misplaced it, and when trying to find it
again using Archie was unsuccessful. My request engendered some
lively, entertaining debate, in which it was determined
that a demo _does_ exist, and that it could be found on one of
the CD's that came with some desperate Netter's latest attempt
to win his wife's affection, a Centris 650.

Coincidentally, after posting that request for info,
I happened to log onto a little used account
of mine, and found the SoftAT demo in .hqx form. When I tried
it out, I found it to be exactly as specified by Charlie Mingo--
it claims to be licensed to "xf" of company "fdgf," and it
does not appear to have any restrictions on it, e.g.,
I let it run for half an hour and it didn't quit. I remember
when I first downloaded this "demo" that I was a little
puzzled, because I could not find any difference between it
and my purchased copy of SoftAT. So it's pretty obvious that
_this_ SoftAT demo is not a demo at all, but some pirate's
delight. So I'll destroy my copy. Thanks for everyone's help
with this.

Has anyone else had any problems with frequently corrupt Stuffit archives? I
recently bought a DAT drive, and that works like a charm, except that Stuffit
archives seem to be very fragile and come out corrupt after I restore them.
This has also happened to other archives that I had not backed up, and ones
from the net...   Does anyone know of a cause for this? I'm pretty sure it's
not an extension conflict, but who knows. I have a Mac II 8/200 and some other
stuff, but that's irrelevant.

Please. Anyone with any info would hold a special place in my heart for the
rest of time.

In the October MacWorld, Suzanne Courteau (p. 109, Tools for Home-Office
Faxing) writes that the low-tech (low-cost) way to address the
serial-port bottleneck is to unplug one serial device from your Mac
and plug in another.  My question: "Is this safe?"  I tend to
be very reluctant to unplug from/plug into my machine when it is
running.  Can one safely "swap" serial devices attached to a running Mac?

TIA for any information.  I'm always interested in "low-tech" solutions.

    I'm a high school teacher and I'm going to teach a new course about
computer applications and technology.  I have a list of software that I plan

teach and some techie things like memory upgrades and dismantling and

parts of Mac.  Does anyone on this net have any suggestions for me in this
course?
The students will be of a wide range in age (13-18) and ability. All
suggestions
are welcome.  We have 24 Macs a couple of CD roms, Mac recorders, multimedia
stations, and a color scanner.
    I was deliberating teaching Claris Works.  But I don't know if I should.
I will teach Word, Excel, CA Graph III, Superpaint, Norton, Hypercard,
PageMaker,MediaText, PhotoShop (to a minor degree), and Communications
software
as yet this one is uncertain as I prefer Microphone but would like to here
what
the real world uses, and various DA"s and utilities.  But I don't know about
Claris.
Is it really used in the "big world" does anyone prefer it to Word 5.1? Why?
    All suggestions and input are welcome.
